Pre-Service Teachers’ Level of Knowledge and Exercise Their Rights as Student

Cem Topsakal

pp. 1 - 18

Abstract

This study aimed to determine awareness and exercise level of pre-service teachers about student rights in
the Faculty of Education, Yüzüncü Yıl University (YYU). Population of the study consists of 3538
undergraduates in 2010-2011 academic year at YYU. Randomly selected 538 students, by cluster and multiphase sampling from all departments and years were taken into the sample in the population. As a data
collection tool, we used a survey developed by researcher. Data are analyzed by describing frequency and
percentage. The research is supported by a qualitative study among students. Results of the main study showed
that pre-service teachers have hardly been aware of and used their rights. The other findings are followed as:
students get knowledge about their rights mostly through their friends and website of the university; however
they desire to prefer it through their supervisors when getting information. During this period, they are noticed to
have problems about lack of counselling and interest by officials in the Faculty of Education. Best way to solve
this problem is that a dynamic counselling service must be provided and officials should show interest and
respect students. Besides legal rights, students mostly ask for high quality of education, struggle with all manners
of discrimination, right to see their marked examination papers and to appeal against examination grades.
Additionally, students demand of new rights such as participation in rector election, right to choose lecturer,
make-up for low grades. According to about three fifth of participants, supervisors fail in their jobs while
admitting lack of knowledge about their rights and demand for information in this matter. When they attempted
to exercise their rights, students meet some problems with lecturers, officials and registrar’s office. Students find
some of current regulations rather useless. They felt hard done-by on some subjects such as pedagogical
formation and studying in the Faculty of Science. In conclusion, the study ends with results-oriented suggestions.

pp. 19 - 35

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine to effects of television series on 11-12 year old children. Descriptive study is used in the research. Study sample consists of 127 students (52 females, 75 males) attending the 5th grade in Yamantürk Elementary School in Rize. Study data were collected by using two separate tools. The first one is a questionnaire consisting of seven questions developed by the researchers. Its validity was tested after applying to ten 5th graders. The other tool was obtained by means of assessing of the students’ drawings illustrating the most influential scene in their favorite television serial. Students’ drawings were analyzed against the “Drawing Evaluation Criteria” developed in consideration of children’s ages, linear drawing developmental stages, social and mental development. As a result of this study, it was seen that 11-12 year old children take mostly as role model the characters from television serials they see and perform those characters’ behaviours by imitating in their daily life. Moreover it was seen that female students like persuasive, funny, romantic, pretty, and goodlooking characters; whereas male students like fighting and powerful characters in television serials including horror and violent.

pp. 36 - 46

Abstract

The purpose of this exploratory mixed methods study was to investigate perceptions of Post Graduate
Diploma in Education (PGDE) student-teachers of the University of Botswana towards inclusion of learners with
Special Educational Needs (SENs) in regular schools. We were also interested in a) the level of preparation and
confidence associated with inclusion of learners with SENs in regular secondary schools in Botswana and (b) the
effectiveness of an introductory awareness course in preparing PGDE students in including learners with SENs,
c) suggestions for improving the course. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaire that
contained both Likert scale and open ended questions. Forty-seven out of 50 PGDE student teachers participated
in this research and completed a questionnaire at the beginning and at the end of an introductory course on
special education. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were carried-out to find the differences in their
beliefs towards inclusion of learners with SENs in the regular classrooms. Findings indicated that there was a
significant difference in the students’ attitudinal scores towards inclusion of learners with SENs between pre-and
post-teaching.

Fen Bilgisi Öğretmen Adayları için Öğretmenlik Tercih Nedenlerini Derecelendirme ve Geleceğe Yönelik Beklentiler Ölçekleri Geliştirme Çalışması

Murat Bursal , Serkan Buldur

pp. 47 - 64
